Hydrovac Excavation in Downtown Kitchener

Hydrovac through the core, from the Victoria Park streets to the King Street corridor and the older industrial blocks along the rail line.

Downtown Kitchener is the part of the city where a locate is a starting point rather than an answer. The ground between Victoria Park and the Conestoga Parkway has been opened for gas, water, sewer, hydro, telecom and buildings for well over a century, and the services the utility owners can mark are only the ones they still have records of. Abandoned gas services, cast iron watermains, private laterals from demolished buildings and old duct banks turn up regularly, which is why daylighting and slot trenching here are hydrovac work rather than backhoe work. Two administrative points matter in the core. The City of Kitchener requires its work permit for any occupation of a road, sidewalk or boulevard with ten business days' notice downtown rather than the five that apply elsewhere in the city, and that stacks with the five-business-day locate timeline. King Street, Victoria Street and other Regional roads are permitted through the Region of Waterloo instead. Access is the other constraint: the truck needs a lane or a loading zone within hose reach, which is planned into the permit and the quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a travel charge outside Kitchener?

Not as a separate line. The surrounding townships are quoted on the same hourly basis as the city, and travel time is part of the day. What changes a quote is the ground and the job rather than the postal code: a long rural run of pole holes with good access is often cheaper per hole than a downtown back yard.

Do the permit rules change outside the city?

Yes. Kitchener's work permit covers city roads and boulevards inside Kitchener. In Woolwich or Wilmot Township the township issues its own road occupancy permits, and Regional roads anywhere in the region go through the Region of Waterloo. The Ontario One Call locate requirement is the same everywhere in Ontario.

Can you reach a back yard?

Usually. The truck parks on the street or the driveway and the hose and wand run to the hole, so a back yard reachable through a side gate is normal work. Very long hose runs reduce suction and slow the dig, and that is one of the things confirmed at the site review.
