Pile, Caisson & Footing Excavation · Kitchener
Pile, Caisson and Footing Excavation in Kitchener
A footing hole next to a foundation wall, a gas service and a neighbour's fence is a hole where the margin for error is zero. That is where water and vacuum earn their rate.
Hydrovac is not usually the first choice for bulk excavation. It is the right choice for the holes that have to be exact, deep, and close to something: pier footings tight to an existing house, caissons for a sign structure or a canopy in a parking lot full of services, pre-excavation at helical pile locations to confirm nothing is in the path, and underpinning pits beside a foundation where undermining the wrong thing is not an option. The water cuts cleanly to the designed depth, the walls of the hole stay straighter than a bucket leaves them, and nothing alongside is disturbed.
Typical jobs in Kitchener
- Addition and deck pier footings on the older lots through Forest Heights, Stanley Park and the Victoria Park streets, where the footing sits a metre from the house wall, the gas and water services enter nearby, and a mini-excavator cannot get past the side gate.
- Helical pile pre-excavation on infill and commercial sites, exposing the top metre or two at each pile location so the pile contractor knows the path is clear before torquing in.
- Caissons for signs, canopies and light standards on commercial sites along Fairway Road, Ottawa Street and the industrial blocks, dug through congested ground to the engineered depth.
- Underpinning and basement lowering pits, cut in sequence to the engineer's drawings beside an existing footing.
- Exposing existing footings for assessment, waterproofing or repair where a backhoe would risk the foundation.
How it works on site
Locations are set out by the contractor or surveyor. The locate is complete, and on sites near the Grand River or Schneider Creek the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulated-area mapping has been checked, since removing material from a site in a regulated area can need a permit. Each hole is cut to the specified diameter and depth, the base is checked, and the hole is either left open and protected for the concrete or pile crew, or shored where depth requires it under the construction regulation. The spoil leaves in the truck. Footing depth is to the engineer's drawing, which in turn respects the Ontario Building Code requirement to be below frost penetration; the depth applicable to a Kitchener lot is confirmed with the City's building division, not assumed.
What sets the quote
Hole count, diameter and depth, soil, access, whether shoring is required, and slurry volume. Deep holes in clay produce a great deal of wet spoil, so disposal loads are a significant part of a caisson job and are quoted as such. Where a site is open and services are not a factor, a mini-excavator is cheaper, and the quote will say so.
Frequently asked questions
How deep can you dig a footing hole?
Comfortably to the depths residential and light commercial footings and caissons call for, and deeper on request. Where anyone has to enter the excavation, Ontario's construction regulation requirements for protecting workers in an excavation apply and the hole is shored or benched accordingly. Most footing holes are poured from the surface and nobody enters.
Is hydrovac cheaper than a mini-excavator for footings?
Not for open sites with good access and nothing in the ground. It is cheaper when the alternative is hand-digging beside services, when the machine cannot reach the hole, or when damaging a foundation, a service or a neighbour's property would cost far more than the difference.
Do you pour the footing?
No. The hole is excavated to the drawing and handed over to the concrete, pile or foundation contractor. Scheduling both on the same day keeps the hole from standing open and taking on water.
