Catch Basin & Culvert Cleaning · Kitchener
Catch Basin and Culvert Cleaning in Kitchener
A catch basin is a settling tank with a grate on it. When the sump fills, it stops settling anything and the next storm sends everything downstream or back up onto the lot.
Every parking lot, condominium road and commercial yard in Kitchener drains to catch basins, and every one of those has a sump below the outlet pipe designed to trap sediment before it reaches the storm sewer. The sump fills with winter sand, leaves, gravel and whatever else washes off the pavement, and once it is full the basin passes everything straight through or, if the outlet is blocked, backs up. The hydrovac truck is the right tool for emptying them: the vacuum lifts the wet sediment out through the grate, the water loosens anything compacted, and the material goes to the debris tank instead of being jetted down the pipe to become somebody else's blockage.
What gets cleaned
- Catch basins and double catch basins on private roads, parking lots and commercial sites, usually on a spring or fall schedule for property managers.
- Oil-grit separators and parking lot sumps, where the sediment is removed and the unit is inspected.
- Trench drains across loading docks, garage entrances and driveways.
- Driveway and entrance culverts on rural and edge-of-city properties toward Breslau and along the township roads, where a silted culvert floods the driveway every spring.
- Window wells, area drains and sump pits on residential and institutional buildings.
Why the material cannot go down the drain
Under the Region of Waterloo's Sewer Use By-law 21-036, a storm sewer may only receive uncontaminated water or storm water, and the sanitary sewer has strict limits on suspended solids. Sediment from a catch basin, which carries road salt, hydrocarbons and fine silt, is neither. It leaves the site in the truck and goes to a facility approved to receive it, and that disposal is part of the quoted price. The difference between a vacuum clean and a cheap jetting job is that jetting pushes the sediment into the pipe downstream; vacuum removes it from the system.
Scheduling and access
Catch basin cleaning is usually quoted per basin for a site, with a visit in spring after the winter sand and often again in late fall after leaf drop. The truck needs to park within hose reach of each basin, which on a busy lot means coordinating with the property manager for cones or a quiet window. Basins on a City road are the City's to maintain; this service covers private property and private roads.
Frequently asked questions
How often should catch basins be cleaned?
For most Kitchener parking lots, once a year in spring after the winter sand is enough, with a second visit in fall on sites with heavy leaf drop or a lot of gravel. Oil-grit separators have their own manufacturer maintenance interval. A basin that floods in a normal rain is overdue.
Can you clear a blocked outlet pipe?
The sump is vacuumed first, which often clears a blockage sitting at the outlet. If the pipe itself is blocked further along, that is a flushing or camera inspection job, which we can arrange or the property manager's drainage contractor can take on.
Do you clean the catch basins on my street?
No. Basins in the City right-of-way are maintained by the City of Kitchener, and a flooded street basin should be reported to the City. This service is for basins on private property: parking lots, condominium roads, commercial and industrial sites, and private driveways.
